Frequently Asked Questions

Neurofeedback Training is a simple treatment that focuses on
solving the root cause of ADD/ADHD and other learning disorders.

What is Neurofeedback Training?
Neurofeedback Training uses computer technology to monitor brainwave activity and trains the brain to produce more healthy patterns through feedback given on a computer screen in the form of video games.

Why is neurofeedback helpful for ADD/ADHD and LD?
ADD/ADHD and LD are connected to unhealthy brainwave activity. As neurofeedback trains the brain to function better the brain can then direct the body more effectively. The result is im-proved symptom patterns.

What role does medication have in treatment?
In initial stages of Neurofeedback Training, the training works best in conjunction with medications. Many individuals eventually are able to reduce or eliminate their need for medications. Some individuals prefer not to use medication even in the initial stages of training. Dr. Foster has a great deal of experience in working with clients’ physicians who prescribe and monitor medications in order to develop the best regimen for each client. You should never discontinue use of medication without consulting your medical care pro-vider.

How soon can we expect to see improvement?
The rate of improvement varies from patient to patient. Most patients see noticeable improvement within the first ten treatment sessions.

Is Neurofeedback Training painful?
Since Neurofeedback Training is non-invasive, there is no pain. And there are no side effects. Most patients find the sessions pleasant and look forward to upcoming visits. Children enjoy the idea of “playing video games with their brains.”

How many training sessions will be needed?
Each individual is different, but the average ADD patient needs 20-40 training sessions and the average ADHD patient needs 40-60 training sessions.

How long do the benefits last?
Anecdotal information indicates that the gains a patient makes in Neurofeedback Training is permanent. This has been confirmed in follow-up studies at one, five, and ten years after completing training.
